I guess David and I have visited about 40 homes since the last auction to pull this sale together. There is one home that stands out for its exquisite style of English decoration put together over the 1980s and 90s and it’s now time to off load a few items that we are delighted to handle. In this sale only the diamond necklace bought in Geneva and now considered unlikely to be worn again, will be offered. It’s very elegant and discreet comprising 17 diamonds suspended from a band of smaller diamonds. It features on the blog. (Other items from this home to include Chinese and English porcelain, a fine oriental carpet and an 18th century French marquetry small table with drawers will be offered in the May sale.)
What the April sale lacks in furniture it makes up for in other sections. The shelves are full and include WINES AND SPIRITS incl. Champagne, Capron & Fils 1976 (5 bottles), Pol Roger (3 bottles), and Piper Heidsieck 1979 (7 bottles), also Glen Mhor Pure Malt Whisky, bottle no. 0783/2000, label signed by Major P.R. Reid 1986, Chateau Lafite 1962, St Estephe Grand Vin de Bordeaux, Renault & Co. cognac in original box, 3 bottles Macallen 1971 18-year-old single Highland Malt Scotch whisky, boxed, 6 cases of Valdivino Chardonnay and Mouton Cadet, bottle of Fonseca white port, other drink incl. Courvoisier, Martell, Seagrams, Grand Marnier, Chivas Regal (2 bottles), etc.
If longcase clocks were politicians we have an Eric Pickles in a 19th century model by Winstanley of Wrexham with a very wide case and Jacob Rees-Mogg in a frightfully smart slender mahogany case with metal stop fluting to the ribbed decoration that flanks the door. Possibly George III, it supports a fine brass and steel face with date, strike and silent and an 8-day movement by George Thornburgh, London. Its finishing touch is a swan-neck pediment. It’s rather fine. Other CLOCKS include mantel clocks incl. an Elliott c.1961, also a carriage clock, marble clocks, wall clock, spelter clocks, a pink marble trio signed Vouziers, and a marble clock with mercury pendulum and eagle surmount. Also there is a large selection of BOXES in mahogany, rosewood and walnut, one with chessmen, an Eastern carved cigarette box, an unusual four-section tiger’s eye box, and an Indian Vizagapatam box, and an ivory-mounted stick carved with a snake head set with compass in 18ct gold, and other carved sticks.
Elsewhere on the shelves we have a 19th century Italian dagger with silver-mounted horn handle, a Diana air gun, old fishing reels, a boxed Hermes silk scarf, a bronze horse, a bronze figure of a seed caster signed Otto Hoffmann, a pair of bronze torch wall lights, a bronze of a rutting bull, champleve wares, Balinese carved winged figures, carved wooden spears, old drum and cymbal sets, an old car luggage box, an oak cased barometer, an Atlas Type A sewing machine c.1875, made in Camden Town, a jade silver-mounted teapot, model planes of the First World War, etc.
POTTERY, PORCELAIN & GLASS includes an important group of Poole Pottery incl. ‘Reflections on a Still Day’ by Alan Clarke, and an important trial piece as a large charger to create a sunset design signed by Alan Clarke and with a signed note of explanation, 6 pieces of Troika, Royal Crown Derby figures, a 7 piece Lladro Jazz Band and other Lladro. Royal Doulton figures incl. Delight, HN 1772, Maureen HN1770, Jill HN2061, and Jack HN2060, also 7 miniature Doulton figures. There are Doulton vases, and a Doulton Nelson loving cup, a large Meissen meat plate painted with honeysuckle, Dresden figures and other continental and oriental porcelain, a Beswick eagle, 36 Victorian pot lids for toothpaste, anchovy paste, cold cream, walnut pomade, etc., a Staffordshire flatback, 2 Whitefriars ‘Drunken Bricklayer’ vases and, if the vendor can bear to part with it, a rare Whitefriars ruby glass owl. We also have an Arklow pottery coffee service in original box, a 19th century blue and white toilet basin, a huge collection of egg cups incl. whistle cups, a large old Masons jug, a collection of orange Whitefriars glass, old Delft candlesticks and vase, Delft tiles, German piano figures, extensive Portuguese cabbage leaf wares incl. dinner plates, an extensive collection of Swarovski (over 50 pieces), incl. a seated bear, a dragon, parrots on a branch, kingfisher, etc., extensive glassware incl. Victorian decanters, pressed glass, and Venetian overlaid glass, an extensive collection of Pendelfin, a collection of paperweights, a collection of Toby jugs, Susie Cooper, a collection of Goebel figures, Beswick and Royal Albert including Old Country Roses, Beatrix Potter figures, royal commemorative items incl. a Buckingham Palace plate and mug, a collection of glass penguins, Longton dinner and meat plates, 19th century dessert wares, Wedgwood Ice Flower dinner wares, an extensive collection of sauce boats, Kevin Francis Pavarotti figures, a Goss Laurence Olivier commemorative plate, a sulphide paperweight of Jenny Lind signed C.R. Albret, France, a pottery figure of Emma Calve as Carmen, 1961, by Dom Art, and, to commemorate Dylan Thomas’ 100th anniversary, a ceramic street scene of Milk Wood, illustrated on the blog.
COSTUME includes a 1920s beaded flapper dress and good fur coats.

JEWELLERY includes a fine diamond riviere, 10 assorted agates, an agate and gilt-metal box, gold and gem-set jewellery.
An extensive SILVER PLATE section includes tea sets, tureens, candlesticks, a claret jug, trays, a canteen of cutlery for 12. SILVER includes a 4-piece tea set, a glass and silver table centre, extensive collections of cutlery incl. Dutch silver, photograph frames, small items incl. cigarette cases, miniatures, a brandy flask, etc., and a stylish Victorian standish, also candlesticks.
HUGE RECORD COLLECTION, BOOKS. An extensive collection of ORIENTAL CARPETS and good ones too. All privately entered. (The May sale includes a fine 19th century Heriz for which I have the receipt for £40,000! Purchased at Sothebys.)
FURNITURE as a section is smaller than usual, in fact we might be hunting for chairs, but it does include good and stylish 1960s items including a desk and seat furniture, a brown leather Habitat suite made by Pieff, an old oak coffer, a charming light oak dressing table with matching wardrobe, a yew dining suite, a Georgian bureau, an upright piano, etc.
GENERAL EFFECTS includes garden ornaments including antique terracotta olive pots and two lead urns, a pillar drill and white goods.
