It’s a long time since we last spoke, last year in fact. So we hope you are well and rested.
The December sale included our first step into the online world in association with UKauctioneers. We put the silver and the better shelf lots on line. It went well but only a couple of lots sold to the online bidders. This sale we are putting all the paintings on line and to that end they are already catalogued and available to view either with UkAuctioneers.com or on our own blog under ‘catalogue’. Every lot has a photograph. Again we will place the ‘better shelves’ on-line. We might try the room furniture too. Still to be decided.

This year starts with an interesting sale, albeit thin in the jewellery and silver departments. Our special lots are a rare 19th century Chinese carved ivory bitong, great walking sticks, a complete studio of paintings by Desmond Rayner and a Bechstein grand piano in a rosewood case.

I’ve just today taken delivery of two Dali signed sculptures from limited editions. One is ‘Immortality of Castor and Pollux’ with a £300-500 estimate and the other is ‘Madonna of Port Lligat’ at £400-600.
Last week I travelled to Hemel Hempstead and took away the stock of a deceased dealer in walking sticks. Can you imagine how much space 400 sticks takes up. Many have wonderful worked ivory handles and dozens have silver handles. And of course there are the spare bits the ends, the ferrules, the sticks and many different handles in ivory, silver, horn and hardstone. I reckon about 40 lots including over a dozen loose carved ivory handles and over 20 sticks with carved ivory handles, mainly as animal heads, a sword stick dated 1816, an endless supply of ebony and malacca canes with silver tops and spares, including a large box of ivory handles, spares, accessories, etc .
Another visit took me to an extensive collection of 19th century Derby porcelain including trios and pairs of vases. THE BLOG HAS PHOTOGRAPHS.
In December we cleared and sold the decorative contents of the home of Claire Rayner. This time we are selling all the paintings including many by her husband, Desmond. He was very gifted. Artists featured in the PICTURES section include Desmond Rayner, Susana, June Mendoza, Anthony Green, G. TOYS include an extensive collection of approaching 100 GILBOW ‘EXCLUSIVE FIRST EDITIONS’ of die cast buses, boxed, Hornby Dublo train set and a 78rpm record of trains by Reginald Gardiner, fantastic Lehmann Gross Bahn engines and carriages, all boxed, other boxed toys, a motor rally lot with maps and magazines, extensive record collections including good jazz, rock and pop, boxed Triang railways, an early wax cylinder player and rolls.
COSTUME includes fur and other coats, suits, hats and handbags, books. JEWELLERY.
The COLLECTORS’ shelves include old ivory, stamps, 1st day covers, postcards, a Grand Prix scrapbook, 32 cartons of packs of Tarot and playing cards, 1950s Picturegoer, wartime ephemera, cigarette cards, a phenomenal badge collection, football programmes, a group of eight old portrait miniatures.
FURNITURE includes an Art Deco walnut dining suite, the extending table on two solid column supports, the top inlaid stylishly with ebony lines, six chairs and matching sideboard, a wonderful inlaid Victorian walnut loo table, a Georgian pedestal breakfast table of good colour, a fabulous quality reproduction Epstein mahogany dining suite including a crossbanded serpentine sideboard, an antique Indian carved wedding chest and a carved settee, a Victorian scrollend settee and a fabulous modern Knoll settee, a fine antique Sri Lankan intricately carved writing table with raised back, a late Victorian chaise longue, a 19th century library chair, credenzas, buffets, chests of drawers, an antique cylinder bureau and a roll top desk, a carved hall seat, pier cabinets, a painted vitrine, AND A BECHSTEIN GRAND PIANO IN A ROSEWOOD CASE.
We have good large period mirrors AND EXTENSIVE ORIENTAL CARPETS, and A FABULOUS CEILING LAMP THE CENTRAL OPAQUE FLORAL WORKED BOWL 19.5 INS DIAMETER FRAMED WITH MATCHING GLASS ‘PETALS’ SUPPORTING 18 LIGHTS, 43 INS DIAMETER IN TOTAL.
Along with, of course, general goods, televisions, white goods, tools, you name it…!
