Did you watch the Antiques Road Trip from here? It might still be on I-Player. Channel 1 BBC, Friday 22nd. It was a little bit of fun in a busy auction and I thought we made a good effort for them.
Down to business! Our last auction of the year is on THURSDAY 12TH DECEMBER AT 11AM.
The saleroom is full and whilst I can’t boast anything hugely valuable I can tell you that we do have the most impressive large pair of carved stone temple lions. At about 300kg each they shouldn’t go walkies too easily. They have been consigned by a vendor who worked in China and brought all their furniture and effects back including some fabulous cupboards, tables, boxes and cabinets, all with a great wax shine and character and some with delightful painted decoration.
In fact the FURNITURE section is extensive including a Regency rosewood chiffonier, Georgian serpentine chest, triple wardrobes, a period linen press and chest of drawers and endless dining tables and chairs. A chaise longue and a Chesterfield settee, a 1960’s wing back chair, display cabinets and bookcases. Pedestal desks, a French drop flap table, old oak coffers, 60’s teak furniture including long sideboards, a Victorian Davenport and Wellington chest and, from a lawer’s office up West a huge 8ft oak filing cupboard with 35 cubicles behind panelled doors, a large pine cabinet of 20 boxes, each with a hinged panelled drop down door, a large mahogany filing cabinet behind two sliding doors and over 50 large metal deed boxes some with original Victorian labels. How good is that!
PICTURES is a 60 lot section including Charles Patrickson, F.E. Jamieson, J. C. Harrison, R. Telford, David French, Harry Morley, W. Kay Blacklock and Miller Smith. A great section for Christmas presents including two good signed motor racing prints of Prost and Noble.
SILVER AND PLATE is a small section but worth a view including a quantity of flatware, a collection of 47 crown style coins First Edition Sterling Silver Proof Set, The Kings and Queens of England by John Pinches, and 1000 Years Of British Monarchy Sterling Proof Silver Edition in 50 pieces in presentation box.
JEWELLERY includes 24 sovereigns, other gold jewellery, watches by Rolex and Tudor, a considerable quantity of costume jewellery including a vast vintage amber and ebony necklace by Gerda Lynggaard Monies, ivory, jade, etc.
Shelf items of PORCELAIN, POTTERY AND GLASS include Chinese shipwreck items of the Kangxi period including a pair of cups, a vase and an unusual monkey teapot. There are also later oriental ceramics and a rather lovely Japanese silver treasure ship and a Japanese lacquered box with signature. Other ceramics include an Italian majolica charger with mythological decoration, two portrait plates, one from the studio of F. Claxton signed by M. C. Lichtenstein, an old Copeland Spode torchere, a large Capodimonte cello table lamp with putti, art pottery by Saxbo of Denmark, ‘ESTN’ and Royal Copenhagen, Royal Doulton figures with low HN numbers including Churchill, Montgomery, cobbler (HN1706), Royal Doulton dinner wares: ‘English Renaissance Collection’, ‘Royal Gold’ including two tureens, ‘Morning Star’, Meissen pot and cover, Etling glass plate, Susie Cooper blue dot coffee service, various Midwinter, Wedgwood ‘Kutani Crane’ dinner service including a very large soup tureen and a pair of urn style vases, Caverswall Royal Golden Jubilee pieces by Mark Brownword including 4 mugs, an extensive collection of Waterford glass including 12 champagne flutes and a water set, a Troika tower vase and a signed Moorcroft Florian Ware vase, Booths Real Old Willow dinner ware, a large amount of Jasper ware, a group of Dresden miniatures, Tuscan ‘Wheatfields’ and ‘Rosina’ China ‘Woman and Home’ ware, 12 Wedgwood ‘Susie Cooper Design’ coffee cups with an original box, extensive Royal Albert ‘Old Country Roses’ dinnerware including two tureens, a vast quantity of William and Catherine wedding mugs, Lladro figures, a Goldscheider figure.
Also on the SHELVES are old doctor’s bags, a Georgian inlaid knife box and an inlaid tea box, a fabulous inlaid tray, a herd of ebonised elephants, an old chest of engineering tools and others, a wonderful Victorian brass and ebony drill brace with original bits, old oil lamps, a part set of Wade pigs, three samplers, a Victorian painted truncheon, a Diana air pistol in original box and with pellets, two leaded glass windows, two violins and a zither, a pen-work ostrich egg, Minton limited edition teapots from the ‘Archive Collection’, an East Asian iron head.
TOYS is a great section with good Dinky toys in original boxes, Max Andrews Vampire Magic Show with original contents and box, V I P model Electric Roadway, by Victory Industries of Gilford, including two MGA and two Healey 3000 model cars, hardly used, Scalextric ‘Pole Position’ in original box, Meccano Gears Outfit A included in a No 6 outfit, in red box, Action Men, a large model fort, a Mamod steam engine, Brickplayer No 3 by J W Spear & Sons, extensive Hornby Dublo in blue boxes, a Dinky 704 Avro York Airliner, model 70A, in original box, a Subbuteo table soccer game, and other toys.
BOOKS in large numbers include five bound volumes of 17th century Journals of The House of Commons, The Age of English Furniture, 1938 by Lawrence & Bullen Ltd in three volumes and one volume, The Age of Walnut by Percy MacQuoid from the library of Clivedon and Lady Astor, cricket books and prints, war books, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone, 1998 with signed Bloomsbury bookplate, volumes on art and pottery, and the manual for an Aston Martin V8.
WINES including ‘Extra Perfection’ by Remy Martin and Fine XO Special Cognac also by Remy Martin, eight Bells Royal Commemorative whisky bells in original boxes, Chateauneuf du Pape 2000, La Tour 1974, Margaux 1979 and Warres port, etc.
GOOD FURS including minks.
COLLECTABLES includes stamps, 17th century and later foreign and British coins, two swords, a German Mauser G98 7.92mm infantry bolt-action rifle, stamped Danzig 1900 and numbered 7877, the stock with applied presentation label ‘From the National War Savings Committee’ dated October 1919 “This Captured German Rifle ……. To C Rowley Esq (Official Agent) In Recognition of Successful Work”, with de-activation certificate dated 8.4.1991, old pipes, military items, medals incl an Iron Cross, old pens, old binoculars, News Chronicle ‘Football Annual’ 1932 on, two unusual metal framed barometers, 2 interesting iron and brass fire grates, old Christmas decorations in original boxes, etc.
GOOD ORIENTAL RUGS. CLOCKS including three long case clocks one by R Glanville, London in a mahogany case and over sixteen mantel clocks including marble and wood.
