Book the hairdresser, get out the tiara, television is coming to Bainbridges!! We are being graced with the company of The Antiques Road Trip for the recording of one edition. This is the programme that makes entertainment out of experts like our dear friend Charlie Ross buying in antique shops and selling in auction! Cart and horse come to mind!
It’s all happening next Thursday the 30th May during our GENERAL SALE OF ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES at The Auction Room, Ickenham Road, Ruislip, Middx HA4 7DL. Viewing, as ever, is Wednesday the day before between 1-7pm.
(It’s worth mentioning that if you don’t want to be seen on television you will need to hide, don a disguise or not attend. Attendance gives automatic consent for use of your image).
About the sale. It’s our usual cocktail of the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. However this sale we have been honoured with the clearance of a Kensington flat that has at least 8 ANTIQUE OIL PAINTINGS – sadly none signed, and the best FURNITURE we have handled for years including a pair of dining chairs bearing the Norman Adams label. We have continental fruitwood commodes and a desk, sets and part sets of chairs, occasional tables, stools, a dining table, a display cabinet and a superb marble-topped centre table all from the 18th and 19th centuries. Further antique furniture comes from the estate of Sir Rhodes Boyson including huge carved oak bookcases. Seat furniture including a Knole settee, a Victorian carved gilt framed settee and two modern settees from George Smith. Amongst the mirrors is an 18th century gilt overmantel. Moving to the 20th century we have two rosewood dining suites and a set of 1960s rosewood wall units for wall brackets, one set with an interesting bronze abstract mount, and also have some interesting old carved wooden panels..
Besides the antique oil paintings the walls are full of ORIGINAL ART AND PRINTS, particularly exciting is Titania with her attendant elves and fairies, attributed to Richard Doyle, in pencil, pen, ink and watercolour heightened with white, it is the most charming illustration of exquisite quality. Artists’ names include Edmund Morison Wimperis, Augustus William Enness, Richard Doyle, Claud Hayes, David Swithenbank, Faber, David Koster, H. Hoven, O.G.M. Kirkham, Liz Carson, Mari L’Anson, W.E. Scrivener, Davis, Silvere Croix, Ann Fuller, Caroline Hunter, John Tooley, Stepson, E. Cramiecka, Ferrell, Elizabeth Parr, E. Howard, James Bayne, Susan Ramsay, Krum, S.H. Clay, S. Marn, James Kizzi, J. Frances Smith, Sydney S. Wilson, Patricia Emery, Tom Cox and John Brampfield. Maps of Middlesex by Blaeu 1646, Sussex by F Faden 1795 and Bath by H Godwin 1816.
JEWELLERY is a small but well formed section including an extensive collection of costume jewellery and in the art objects section we have a pair of period gold and garnet set miniature slide frames featuring 18th century miniatures of a gentleman and a child after James Scouler circa 1760. SILVER AND PLATE includes two tall pairs of Sabbath candlesticks, tea services, flatware and ornamental items, also a boxed collection of 25 John Pinches silver Jubilee medals.
The shelves are full as usual and include oriental PORCELAIN including a collection of Kutani bottle vases, and a pair of 19th century Chinese porcelain pink graviata ground small bowls. We have good glass, bronzes including an early Tibetan head, clocks including an electric long case by Pul-syn-etic by Gent & Co., boxes, an old gun, swords, a working barograph by Richard Freres, toys including modern model trains, one a Hornby Royal Train that hasn’t even been unpacked. BOOKS. Do you have a need for wool? We have enough to reach the moon and back from one private home. It comes in endless Fortnum and Mason wicker hampers! We have modern TVs by Sony and collectable hifi by Bang and Olufsen, Leak, Marantz, Mission and Eagle. There is even an Alpha 8-track player and tapes. Get out the flares! Lighting including crystal table lights, fishing rods. We also have vintage clothing and furs.
COLLECTABLES also includes cameras old and modern, snooker cues including the Lindop by Fred Davis, a John Spencer folding cue in aluminium box and another by MBS, the biggest stamp collection I’ve seen in years, mainly loose stamps and covers, two good private entries of football programmes to include Watford, Arsenal Chelsea and West Ham, postcards, pen sets including Sheaffer, and a Parker set marked 10K, photographs, Scalextric. Violins. From a client’s grandparents there is interesting ephemera and tools relating to their business as cigarette makers J Eskenazi & Co with commissions to make cigarettes in best Virginia for the Orea Cigarette Co Limited of 35 Old Bond Street London, including a sample box of ‘pure Turkish’ and loose tobacco.
The saleroom looks like a souk there are so many CARPETS. Some are old and good. Some are very large.
WINES & SPIRITS seem to be abundant including a box of Piper Heidsieck champagne, a magnum of Moet and Chandon, wines including old chateau bottles, a 2000 Poully-Fuisse, Taylors and Graham port, brandies, whiskies including Southern Comfort, etc.
GENERAL EFFECTS includes a Free Rider modern mobility scooter and a folding wheelchair. There is a modern Clavinova keyboard by Yamaha and other keyboards. Concrete and metal garden urns and a bird fountain head. Old wire work plant stands and 50’s metal garden furniture. Wooden garden benches, modern Sony TVs.
