The overwhelming presence in the saleroom at the moment is a fabulous and extensive collection of VINTAGE AND RETRO CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES spanning 1900 to 1980. It comes from a collector.
Whether you are planning to attend the Festival of Speed, where period costume is de rigueur, or are simply a fanatic or dealer you won’t want to miss this collection. It includes 1940s beaded dresses, a 1950s cotton two-piece with sequin decoration, Laura Ashley 1980s dresses, day dresses, jackets and coats incl. Vivienne Westwood, 1940s long velvet dresses, suede, chiffon and beaded blouses, lingerie incl. camisoles, cami-knickers and corsets, accessories incl. skin handbags for day and evening, lace, satin and crochet gloves, vintage hats, superb beaded and embroidered shawls, shoes, boots, belts, a cotton lace wedding gown and another made from parachute silk . There is a small group of stunning FURS including a fabulous floor-length fox fur, another with suede trim, and stylish dark minks.
Looking at the CLOCK shelves we have a boulle mantel clock, a four-glass mantel clock with mercury pendulum, a large marble clock and 3 carriage clocks, a 19th century mahogany, oak and inlaid longcase clock, the steel and brass face with date and moonphase by Blaylock, Longtown, a large 19th century barometer with a pretty mother of pearl inlaid frame, a very special Chinese export gold and black lacquer games box and, from the same home, a swagger stick concealing a short sword by W J Waterer of 9 Pughs Place W1, other boxes incl. correspondence, tea and jewellery, a Japanese short sword in a shagreen scabbard concealing a small knife, and other swords. For the musician we have a clarinet and a trumpet.
I guess the best entry we’ve had for a while (ignoring Chinese porcelain!) is of model steam, clockwork and electric TRAINS, early stuff and in good order. It’s all photographed on the blog. English and continental SILVER & PLATE includes a trio of tall trumpet vases and a trio of heavy Victorian table decorations along with a fine pair of 18th century cast candlesticks, 10″, maker, IC. PAINTINGS is an interesting section incl. a large marine watercolour by Thomas Bush Hardy in good and bright order. Other artists incl. G. Matan, W. Nuffield, A. Halt, T. Hodgson Liddell, A. Debuis, John Hutton, Blanche Green, David Muirhead, H. Maxwell, Arthur Hayes, Guy Malet, Frank Saltfleet, Cecil Ware, and William Hill Porter.
JEWELLERY includes gold and silver and a very nice pair-cased Gg III pocket watch by Over and Sons in 18ct outer case with crest. SHELF ITEMS include lots of oriental, an extensive collection of Beswick horses, a large collection of commemorative mugs, Meissen, dinner services, a large quantity of whiskies, a turtle shell, a set of buffalo horns. COLLECTABLES include cricketing ephemera, good cigarette cards and postcards, old radios, a large ivory puzzle ball on stand, an extensive stamp collection, film stills, coins, carved pipes, enamelled cigarette holder, lighters one as a Rolls Royce radiator, a silhouette and an early 19th century portrait miniature. BOOKS includes a 1614 bible printed by Robert Barker in a moulded leather binding.
FURNITURE includes a fine 19th c. satinwood painted display cabinet, a Georgian 2-tier table, two 19th c. Davenports, one with slide, a George III tray-top night cupboard, a good set of 7 Waring & Gillow ladder-back chairs, an 18th c. walnut chest on stand, pretty settees, a large mahogany four-poster bed frame, continental inlaid occasional tables, large oak pieces, a large 1960s rosewood suite by Charlie Shine, modern furniture, white goods, etc.
