Still happily inundated with enquiries from across the world following the Chinese vase auction, we have filtered through about 600 emails and selected two wonderful items, one from the UK and, from Holland, we have accepted a fine large chrysanthemum bowl, with six-character Qianlong seal mark to the base and of the period, the rounded sides with gently outscrolled rim painted in Ming style in bright underglaze blue with simulated ‘heaping and piling’, with scrolling chrysanthemum tendrils interrupted by six flowerheads enclosing ‘ji” good luck characters, a wave border to the short splayed foot, a further flowerhead to the interior, 9.65 ins (24.4 cms) diameter. Photographs and the wonderful and extensive provenance is here on the web site. It reads like something from Madam Butterfly. The estimate is £10,000 to £15000.
The other fabulous piece from an English family colection is a rare 18th century Chinese underglaze blue and copper red vase, the rounded body of quatrelobed oval section painted in a soft pale red with a formal pattern of scrolling lotus, the short neck with a band of florets and scrolls in a bright blue below stiff leaves in a similar red, the foot with red borders divided by blue lines, 7.2 ins (18.2 cms) high. The estimate is £8,000 to £10,000.
From an important Far Eastern collection we have a fine Chinese porcelain famille rose vase, of slender baluster form, the gilt powder blue ground reserved with two panels in the Qing falang style, one with birds, peony and prunus, the other with birds, peony and bamboo, the neck interior in pale turquoise enamel, the base similar but with central white reserve within a double ring in underglaze blue, 16.35″ high. It carries an esimate of £3000 to £5000
Lot 556 is a Beijing ruby glass vase of paper-beater form, with engraved four character mark of Qianlong, 10″ high. There are many other Oriental pieces including a large Chinese Neolithic jar with abstract decoration. There are many illustrations on the web site
The rest of the sale is growing. The PICTURES section is full, and includes a large and fine hand coloured aquatint view of Warsaw by Vogel titled Varsovie and a pastel signed Leopald Pilichowski of two Jewish scholars along with works by or attributed to Andrew Macara, John Afflick, Runa Malmer, Edward Emerson, David Gentleman, Roberto Leon, Henry Charles Woollett, Pietro Annigoni, and R. Simkin, and a quantity of military watercolours and prints. SILVER AND PLATE is a full section and mainly silver. The full display shelves include a large table centre, 18 ins, a dressing table mirror, 19 ins, candlesticks, tea sets, trays, fruit bowls, cigarette boxes, good flatware and over 20 pieces of Indian silver including a very large cup. There are plenty of plated wares.
JEWELLERY is a great section. We can’t move for gold, diamonds and coloured stones, with pieces of all ages including gold watches. We have a 1st century BC Celtic silver bracelet. ART OBJECTS include carved ivory, netsuke, medals, old corkscrews, a large quantity of decorative walking sticks, some carved and others mounted in silver, one incorporating a compass and another made from a fish spine. There are crocodile bags and cases, coins, a huge stamp collection, ivory napkin rings and a carved opium pipe, also old boxed pipes, old cigarette lighters including an original Dunhill Tinder Pistol, a military drum, a Fowlers long scale calculator, powder compacts, etc.
The ‘smalls’ shelves are full. POTTERY AND PORCELAIN includes Royal Doulton Mandalay, Burgundy and Rondelay tea and dinner wares, old Noritake, Minton, Susie Cooper, Troika, Royal Crown Derby, a collection of blue and white pottery and cut glass. We have old marbles, an old tribal carved stool, bowler and top hats, stereoscopic slides and viewer, cameras, a large metal Buddha, a Dunhill humidor, old scales, old copper pans, old scales, an Ekco type A22 circular black bakelite radio, microscopes, old clocks, a boulle desk set, an old stone Buddha, pig skin suitcases and old leather cases including attaché cases and silver mounted wallets, an Accoson model B calculator, a Chinese woven silk panel depicting the Bund at Shanghai as at c.1928, signed in English and Chinese, by the ‘Kuo Hwa Artistic Silk-Weaving factory Hang Chow China’, in tones of beige, 35 ins long, framed, sold with a modern guide book to the Bund,
18th century tiles, interesting posters including 1950s health and safety and wartime propaganda, toys including old teddy bears, one with a moving lower lip, dolls, motorcycle and car ephemera from the 1930s to 1950s, old air rifles, old bottles, old fishing rods, stained glass, a large remote controlled aeroplane still unconstructed, records including rock and pop, and demo 78s. BOOKS include volumes on war and film. We have glamour magazines, a Georgian style fire basket as new, a Regency brass fender and more. COSTUME includes retro Moschino jeans (‘Peace and Love’), 1950s cotton day dresses, and evening wear, fine quality gentlemen’s tweed suits and overcoats including Aquascutum, good quality handbags including crocodile, old nylon stockings in original packaging, sheepskin and fur coats including mink, new ladies’ shoes, bolts of fabric, including Sanderson, etc.
FURNITURE includes endless display cabinets, one of large dimensions and inlaid. We have lots of desks including a fine inlaid office desk circa 1900, various kneehole desks and pretty decorative desks, also a fine satinwood bedroom suite by Waring and Gillow and a wonderful floral inlaid occasional table stamped Maple & Co. Other items include an early 19th century square piano on fluted legs, triple wardrobes, a Victorian buffet, a gentleman’s chair and a good modern pair of wingback arm chairs, an extending mahogany dining table c.1900, inlaid dining chairs, Eastern metal bound furniture, carved oak, and an Ercol suite in golden oak. Cocktail cabinets include one by Epstein.
There are plenty of modern EFFECTS including B&O televisions, a modern two piece suite and good white goods, carpets, etc.
